Classic Clues: Solving a British mystery

Like brewing the perfect pot of tea, mysteries are another thing that the British just do better. They’re twistier, grittier, wittier, clue-ier and just more fun. About two centuries ago, Great Britain’s stiff upper lips began wagging about Jack the Ripper and deadly crimes – with crime fiction saturating Victorian era literature – and they haven’t stopped since.

This specially curated retrospective is a tribute to the classic British mystery, featuring six captivating “whodunits.” There’s a four-film homage to The Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie, beginning with the newly restored edition of Sidney Lumet’s seminal adaptation Murder on the Orient Express (1974) followed by the three similarly star-studded adaptations inspired by its success: the brilliant Death on the Nile (1978), the twisting The Mirror Crack’d (1980) and the witty Evil Under the Sun (1981). Plus there’s newly restored editions of two of the greatest mystery films of all time, the Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or-winning masterpiece, Blow-Up (1966) and Victim (1961) the brilliant mystery thriller that daringly smashed through Britain’s homosexual taboos.

With a cup of tea or a pint in hand, prepare to pay close attention, as we delve into a world of intrigue and suspense with these classic British mystery tales.
