Andy Serkis’ feature directorial debut tells the inspiring true story of Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge) and his wife Diana (Claire Foy, The Crown) – a couple who refused to give up in the face of a devastating illness – and their love story that championed living every breath as though it was their last.
Charismatic, adventurous and brilliant, Robin (Garfield) has his whole life ahead of him when he is paralysed by polio at the age of 28 and given just months to live. Against all advice, Robin’s wife Diana (Foy) brings him home from the hospital where her devotion and witty determination inspire him to lead a long and fulfilled life. Together, they refuse to be limited by expectations, dazzling others with their humour, courage, and lust for life.
From a screenplay by two-time Oscar nominee William Nicholson (Gladiator, Shadowlands) – and produced in partnership with Robin and Diana’s son John Cavendish – Breathe is not only a beautiful love story, it is also a film about two truly indomitable spirits who defied the odds to pave the way for change.
